Chlorhexidine Gluconate

Drug Class: Antimicrobials

  • Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent; chlorhexidine gluconate is a gluconate salt.
  • Used to reduce the level of oral S. mutans, and incorporated into mouth rinse solutions. 
  • Shown to inhibit plaque formation, also reduce gingival inflammation, and prevent dental caries.

Analised Oral usages of Chlorhexidine Gluconate in Dentistry: 

(1) Secondary prevention following oral surgical procedures including periodontal therapy  

(2) Implant dentistry, 

(3) Management of dental caries, 

(4) Patients with maxillomandibular fixation, 

(5) Medically compromised patients, 

(6) Minor recurrent aphthous ulceration, 

(7) Orthodontic patients, and 

(8) Contol of bacteremia and operatory contamination by oral bacteria.
